Create an iPhone 4 style, OS ad in minutes
Photoshop Tutorial CS4.
Level: Beginners/Intermediate
This is a fairly simple tutorial of creating the iPhone OS ad. I think this was prior to the official launch of the IOS . I just thought this could be a cool tutorial on DPX MAG. This is the fastest tutorial I have ever made. So lets get started.
First open a new document of any size you want ,I have just used a random size.
Fill the layer with any color of your choice, but personally i find blue the most appealing.
Just make an ellipse using the elliptical tool , hidden under the marque tool in the tool box
Fill it with a lighter shade of blue
Activate the transform tool ( ctrl T on windows ) ( cmd T on Mac ) and bend the shape in such a way the it looks like a light source from an angle . Use the corner anchor points to bend it in three dimension. Press and hold the cmd key on mac and ctrl key on windows before moving the anchor points
Then go to Select > Deselect to deactivate the selection. After that, go to Filter > Bur > Gaussian Blur and drag the slider all the way up to get the desired result.
This an optional step . You can skip this step if you want to , because it will not effect the final result . I just thought of giving it a bit of an extra effect, just like we see in a drop light. Also it gives it a bit of density. Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise . Keep the setting to a very low value as shown. You don’t want the noise to become too obvious. Choose Gaussian and Monochromatic also .
Select the type tool and type a really large Four Number. I feel Myraid Pro is the best font for this so I chose, you can choose any font.
Before we go further I recommend this step very important because otherwise you will end up with jagged edged in the final result.
Convert the Number Four to a shape layer by going to the layers panel and right clicking on the layer . You will have to choose Convert to Shape to convert the text to a shape
Now you will see the shape layer instead of the text layer. Just duplicate the layer by simply dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel. Hide the previous shape layer and just keep on shape layer visible just like shown below
Now to give the number a little bit of perspective. Press cmd T (Mac) ctrl T (Win) to bring up the transform controls. Press the Cmd+shift+opt (Mac) or ctrl+shift+alt (win) and select the top left anchor point with your cursor and just Draaaag it until you get a fairly decent perspective of the number
Rotate the number slightly towards the right . Also you can reduce the thickness if you want to. Drag the center left anchor point to get the desired result.
Place the number in a position where you can see just bottom half part of the number.
Make visible the other shape layer which we had kept hidden
Optional Step. You can leave the color to white. I just thought if you change the color , it might help in visualizing the shadow and help in creating a better perspective .Fill in a darker shade of Blue to this layer
It should look some what like this
Press cmd T (Mac) ctrl T (Win) to bring up the transform controls again . Right click any where inside the number and flip it up side down.
Press the Cmd+shift+opt (Mac) or ctrl+shift+alt (win) and select the bottom left anchor point with your cursor and just drag the points to get the same perspective we gave to the previous shape layer. You may need to place the number to match with the bottom part of the top shape. Press enter to commit the change.
Make a selection by cmd ( mac ) or Ctrl ( win ) clicking on the layer as shown below
Delete the layer and you will be left behind with only the selection just like this.
Make a new layer above the ellipse layer and right below the first shape layer
Fill it with the same blue color or a little darker blue of your choice.
Press the letter ‘q’ and enter the quick mask mode. At this point you will not see any change happening on your screen , only you will see that the title bar shows that your are in a quick mask mode
Press the D key to change to default color ( Black and White ) and select the gradient tool and choose the third gradient , the black to white gradient
Hold the shift key and drag the gradient across the document . You will get a red gradient just like this.
Exit the quick mask mode by pressing the letter ‘q’ on the keyboard. You will end up in the marching ants selection. But the selection will have to be inverted because we want the red part to be selected. So just go to Select > Inverse.
Add a Gaussian Blur to give it a bit of realistic touch. . Any value between 60- 90 should be fine.
Now since we have add a gradient selection, the blur will not be an abrupt blur but a gradual smooth flowing blur
Just Add some text of your choice to finish off .
